Read the passage:
Mr. Hamad al-Fadel is a teacher of English. He has been teaching for about ten years. His students in the 2nd and 3rd secondary grades like him very much. They always speak highly of him, admire his punctuality, competence, devotion and understanding, and above all his friendliness and smartness. His motto in teaching has become an ever remembered quotation: " The day I stop learning, I know It's the time to say good-bye to the world."
One day, Mr. Hamad al- Fadel comes to class with a completely different attitude. He doesn't want to be traditional any more: no more reading in the English textbook, no more class recitation and homework; and no more correcting and grading papers. He seems to have lost faith in the traditional activities of teaching and learning. He may have decided to lay aside the "old" Mr. Fadel and start building a new image, the "new" Mr. Fadel.
The same day, Mr. Fadel surprises the students, who have known him for some times, with distinct behavior. To their surprise, he doesn't carry the briefcase he usually carries; he doesn't seat himself the way he usually does; and he doesn't inquire about that day's activities and homework. Because he is slightly busy at first with some paper work, his students do not notice the change except when he stands facing them and start talking. Now let us sneak inside and wait to see what is going to happen.
Mr. Fadel: Good morning everybody.
The class: Good morning, sir.
Mr. Fadel: Today I have something unusual to say, and want you all to take part in it. First, I want you to put your books back in your desks and prepare yourselves to leave.
Nader: Leave? Where to, sir.
Mr. Fadel: now do as I say, then follow me to the auditorium.
Ahmed: What a great idea ! Are we going to movie, sir?
Mr. Fadel: I'll be watching you, and you'll be watching yourselves! (general laughter) All right. Let's go now. (The class leaves behind Mr. Fadel, and by the time they are seated, he starts)
Mr. Fadel: Now, I have the feeling that our English periods have become boring and uninteresting. Too much routine work is being done, and English, with all activities it involves, is becoming a too mechanical course: reading, reciting , testing and so forth.
Samar: Excuse me, sir I don't think I share your feeling, and most of us, if not all, don't either. Your know how much we like you and your periods, as well.
Mr. Fadel: I do, Samar, and I thank you for that. But It's time we had some change. We should think of something new, something different.....motivating and interesting. You know what I mean something that release us from routine.
Samar: Splendid ! What's on your mind , sir?
Mr. Fadel: It's not what on my mind, but rather what you have in mind. That's what you are here for. So, let me hear some brilliant ideas. Come on ! Speak up, and then we'll see what we can do about it. Remember one thing..just one thing....I want something feasible.... something workable and motivating. Okay, back to Samar now. Speak up, Samar. We're all ears.
Samar: I do agree, sir, that some change is required every now and then. So how about a workshop? I mean, starting a workshop.
Luay: (interrupting) A workshop? What's a workshop?
Samar: A room..full of activities... a chance for teamwork ....a plan to be carried out in group.
Dana: Sounds good to me! A splendid idea, Samar! We'll figure out something, work on a plan for it, and divide the various activities among us.
Khaled: I don't think I follow you, Dana. Could you be more specific?
Dana: How about a wall magazine?
Khaled: a wall magazine? You mean writing articles posting them, and..........?
Dana: That's exactly what I mean.
Samar: Not just writing articles, but drawing pictures, too.
We can have rhymes, riddles, puzzles, photographs of VIP's
and the like.Madhat: I'm good at caricature, and..... I think Amal has
lots of jokes to tell, don't you Amal? (She smiles) Besides,
Luay writes poems occasionally. I've read some myself. I
think they are very niceDana: Now we have something to start with. The whole
idea seems feasible enough, I'm sure we can work it out
successfully.Samar: We have magazines at home, too. We can select
some articles and pictures. So, what do you think, Mr. Fadel?Mr. Fadel: Brilliant! I haven't expected that much. It seems
everybody's going to enjoy it. This is one thing I agree to.
Now let's come up with another brilliant idea Who'd like to
proceed^ Well. I gues? Nizar would, wouldn't vou°
Nizar Well now aoout having creative dramatics, sir?
'. mean starting a drama club. You know we have the school
theater and the school library. I think we can choose a play, an
interesting one, and act it on the stage.Salem; This is too much, Nizar. It's next to impossible. Do
you want us to play Romeo and Juliet or Ali Baba and the
Forty Thieves? (laughter)Tarek: (Interrupting nervously) Stop your untimely
remarks, Salem, why are you always in the way? Can't you doanything better? We're not thinking of performing Romeo and
Juliet or Aii Baba now. We can choose something simpler.Salem: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you, Tarek.
May: Well, I guess Nizar has a point there, and it makes
sense to me. We can select a one - act play, for instance. It
won't take much time, and it doesn't need much rehearsal,
either. It may turn into a spectacular performance if we work
hard on it. You know what the famous proverb says, "'Where
there is a will, there is a way "Mr. Fadel: I do approve this project, too. It will teach us a
lot. I played some minor roles are the university 1 think 1 can
handle that without much toil on my part,Fayez: How about starting a cinema club, sir?
Ibrahim: How about interviewing some TV.. stars or stage
actors right here, sir?Hiba: A magazine library, sir7
Mr. Fadel: I think that's enough for the time being. The
bell will be ringing in no time, I gues. There is one thing
before we wind up. During the weekend, I want you to prepare a workable plan, a timetable to follow and a list of priorities to
start with. Next Monday, we'll give these a second
thought and see what we can do. I sure by the end of this
month we'll have done something unusual, interesting andmotivating. Now, let's go back to class
